3 Steps for Cloud Migration Success

The word “cloud” can trigger both a sense of excitement and apprehension. Excitement for the endless and transformational opportunities that the cloud can offer, and apprehension for the unknown, accompanied by the disconcerting prospect of migrating complex applications onto untapped platforms.

There can be a fine line between the success and failure of a cloud migration. Organisations that get it right enjoy all the benefits like cost savings, automation, resiliency and speed to market. Those that don’t quite hit the mark with their cloud migration can be in for blown budgets and security shocks just to name a few.

So how do we get it right?

What does it take to be on the right side of the P/L? What do we need to do to ensure we don’t appear on the front page of the news for yet another security breach? The answer to this, like most, is multi-faceted.

To be successful in your migration to the cloud, you need a combination of:

  1. Committed leadership to navigate and mitigate any resistance to change

  2. Robust project and change management to ensure that workloads are migrated across in a logical and controlled manner.

  3. Appropriate skillsets to help architect, deliver and manage a cloud environment that is cost conscious, resilient and secure.

Most organisations that are sold on the idea of the cloud are generally good at setting up high level strategies, executive directives, reporting structures, escalation paths, governance forums, task forces and working groups required to say “we are serious about moving to the cloud”.

Organisations are sometimes good at project and change management especially when the scale of migration is small. However, for larger migrations, many will struggle to come up with a program that carves out manageable pockets of work that are mutually exclusive of each other. It is not uncommon for companies to become paralysed by dependencies, ultimately finding themselves doing nothing for months or even years.

Appropriate skill sets are what usually trip up most organisations. The idea of “re-purposing and re-skilling” existing IT staff to manage cloud environments is a noble one, but alas it can be haphazard, overly ambitious and time consuming. Granted, over time, existing staff may begin to transition over, however when you are running a tight ship, it is better to stick to those who have done it before and know what they are doing.
